Originally designed in 2014 for a pilot parklet project in Boston, ad-bloc is a plastic building block that is durable, easy to install, easy to maintain, and linkable. ad-blocs are made of durable plastic and can be filled with water to make them heavy and stable. ad-blocs can be arranged in a variety of configurations: they can be placed side by side, perpendicularly, or be stacked, to create a wide range of seating areas. A stool, which doubles as a planter, works as an interlocking peg to hold the blocs together. Cylindrical voids in the blocks can be used to place standard-sized planters.
In 2016, ad-bloc arrived in New York City. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) commissioned their own ad-bloc set which was deployed at summer health and wellness events in The Bronx and Manhattan.
